Life Sketch of Winston Borbor Barclay
Sunrise: June 2, 1946, to Sunset: August 4, 2025
Winston Borbor Barclay , affectionately known as Uncle Borbor, The Bucks or Papa, was born
on June 2, 1946, in Monrovia, Liberia, to the late Elizabeth “Cece” Seth Barclay and Robert
Arthur Barclay. The youngest of his mother’s nine children, Winston grew up surrounded by a
large and loving family.
As a child, Winston displayed a natural talent for working with his hands. His creativity and skill
led him to pursue a trade as a carpenter and wood smith. Through apprenticeship and years of
dedication, he became highly skilled, creating beautiful and functional pieces such as cabinets,
caskets, and custom wood furniture. His craftsmanship was admired by many, and he took great
pride in his ability to build from inception with precision and care.
Following the devastating Liberian Civil War, Winston made the courageous decision to migrate
to the United States of America in 1992 in search of peace, opportunity, and a better future for
his family. He first resided in Illinois, later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and eventually settled in
Minnesota, which became his final home.
In each place he lived, Winston’s heart for service and family was evident. He was known for his
caring and nurturing spirit, often serving as a caretaker for many children, offering love and
support wherever it was needed.
Winston was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his
loving wife, Sophie Mason Barclay, ten children—five biological and five
stepchildren—twenty-two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends spanning across the United States and Africa. He leaves behind
cherished memories with members of the Nimley, Barclay, Kofa, Weeks, Gbassagee, and
Johnson families, all of whom deeply mourn his passing.
Winston’s faith in God was the foundation of his life. A devoted follower of Christ, he was an
active member of The Church of Jesus Christ, where he worshipped faithfully and encouraged
others with his testimony and service.
He is also survived by his oldest siblings: Sarah Barclay Kofa, Dr. Mac Arthur Wolo, Annette
Barclay, and Piso Barclay. Winston was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert and
Elizabeth Barclay, and his older sisters, Elizabeth Wortor Nimley Taylor and Robertetta
Barclay.
Winston’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and faith. Though his earthly journey has come
to an end, his legacy of service, kindness, and dedication to his family will live on in the lives of
those he touched.
As a family, we find comfort in the promises of God’s Word. Matthew 5:4 reminds us:
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Though our hearts ache, we are assured that Winston has been welcomed into eternal rest. For
many years, he longed for the moment he would be reunited with his beloved mother, whose
passing was a defining moment in his life. It brings peace to know that, in the end, she was there
to lovingly welcome him home into the presence of the Lord.
Winston will be deeply missed, but we rejoice knowing that he is now at peace, embraced by
God’s everlasting love.
