Joseph “Crazy Joe (CJ)” Eugene Then of Randall, Minnesota, passed away on August 5th, 2023 at Hennepin County Medical Center at the age of 65. Joe was born on June 30th, 1958 to Eugene and Phyllis (Kedrowski) Then in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm, the oldest of nine siblings, and graduated from Apollo high school in 1976. Joe was a loving husband to Danette, who he married on May 5th, 1979. They were married for 44 years and had three daughters whom he cherished: Jolene, Danielle, and Brittany.
Joe was an extremely talented mechanic; primarily self-taught and driven by the burning desire to explore and learn new things. If someone told Joe he couldn’t do something, he didn’t quit until he proved them wrong. Joe’s engineering and mechanical abilities were renowned and appreciated by all who knew him. He was the epitome of the phrase ‘jack of all trades’, and lived by his own mantra, “the impossible only takes fifteen minutes longer”. Loyal and dependable to a fault, Joe’s passion was to use his gifts to help others. He showed kindness to everyone, and the only people he didn’t help were those he didn’t know needed it. The only thing Joe loved more than using his handyman expertise to help others, was his family. His favorite past time was to be on the lake or in the woods with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Joe also enjoyed working in his garage and workshop, where he would often be found tinkering with anything from an engine rebuild to a baby basinet for his newest grandchild. Joe’s infectious personality and quick wit brought a smile and a sense of belonging to everyone he met. Deeply loved by his family and friends, he will be profoundly missed.
Joe is preceded in death by his father Eugene Then and sister Brenda Habiger. He is survived by his wife Danette (Kampa) Then; daughters Jolene (Steven) Eldien, Danielle (Michael) Asp, and Brittany (Garrett) Grams; his ten grandchildren Ethan, Ian, Elena, Aiden, Kaelyn, Dylan, Miriam, Joseph, Harlan, and Scarlett; his mother Phyllis (Kedrowski) Then; siblings LeRoy Then, Judy (James) Woods, Ronald (Kerri) Then, Tammy (Leon) Zierden, Amy Weaver, Dayna Then, and Heidi (Joseph) Anderson.
In honor of Joe’s wishes, a pot-luck BBQ will be held as a celebration of life on August 13th, 2023 from 2:00 PM until Sunset at Bingo Park in Randall, MN. At 6:00 PM please join us in the pavilion to share stories and memories honoring Joe. Please bring a side to share.
