James Toliver Obituary

James was the true definition of a family man—steadfast, loving, and selfless in every way. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. There wasn’t a day that went by when he didn’t show his pride in them, whether through a smile, a story, or a simple act of kindness. His love was steady and unending, a foundation that continues to hold our family together even in his absence. Though he is no longer with us, his warmth, wisdom, and devotion live on in our hearts and in the generations he so deeply cherished.

James Earnest Toliver Sr., 75, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota passed comfortably at home surrounded by his loved ones on October 11th, 2025. He was born in Roe, Arkansas in 1950 to Gladys Banks, who never allowed her son James to discipline his son in front of her. She would say, “James, don’t you be yelling at my baby (Thaddius)”. He was known for being an all-around athlete at Wonder High School, competing in Football, Baseball and Track and Field where he was a Track all-star! He was the biggest family man. Always involved with his children and grandchildren's life.

LIFE PARTNER – Susan Gravelle met James in 1985; she was his trainer at the Hyatt downtown Minneapolis, MN. The two had been married for twenty-one years. Sharing love, laughter, and happiness watching their children and grandchildren grow. The whole center of their world.

CHILDREN – Deshawn King, James Earnest Toliver Jr., Thaddius Toliver, Dorrell Spencer, Damion Spencer, Chandell Knox, and Latrice Spencer.

GRANDCHILDREN – He had so many grandchildren. The relationships he created with every one of his grandchildren were unique. Each one is special in its own way.

HOBBIES – Watching the Vikings, SKOLLLL!! Fishing, playing softball, cooking, and you can’t forget his number one: BINGO. Every time you called dad, he was at the bingo hall or casino.

James was preceded in death by Gladys Banks (Mother), Richard Banks (Stepfather) and Shelia Toliver (Partner). Survived by his children Deshawn King, James Earnest Toliver Jr., Thaddius Toliver, Dorrell Spencer, Damion Spencer, Chandell Knox, Latrice Spencer and his many grandchildren. Also survived by his Sister/Cousin Cathy Harris and his Brother Lester Hogan.
