Gilbert (Bert) Lee Nicholson
Bert age 71, of Saint Paul, MN passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Loretta at his side on
January 22, 2024.
Bert was born in Grand Island, NE and lived in Nebraska until he followed his heart to Minnesota in 2012 and married for
a third time. He was predeceased by his first wife, Suzanne Marie and his second wife, Carol Ann, parents, Raymond and
Donna Nicholson, brothers, Roger and Rodney. He had graduated high school in Sydney, NE and later earned a degree
from Southwest College in Lincoln, NE. He retired after almost 30 years with the Nebraska Department of Roads, where
he was the Sign Shop Superintendent.
He was known for his extraordinary sense of humor, his love of writing stories, bowling (State Championship in 1993),
fishing, and most of all for his bass guitar music. He played with several bands, including Unforgiven and Cactus Hill. (He
was still waiting for Brad Paisley to contact him to join Brad’s band.) Incredibly, he was able to play with neuropathy in
his hands up until the time of his passing. He was first to help others and enjoyed babysitting and playing with grandkids
and pets. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife Loretta, Bert is survived by two children in Nebraska, Kimberly (Lonnie) Piitz , and Caleb, 4 grand-
daughters, two step-children, Ginya Davis and Spencer (Sara) Mattson, and five step grand-children, brothers, Dale, Alan
(Nancy) and David (Cynthia) and sister, Cheryl (Jim) Pfeiffer, and many other relatives and friends.
Service will be held at Billman-Hunt Funeral Home, 2701 Central Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418 on February 5, 2024.
Visitation will begin at 10 AM with the prayer service at 11 AM.
Memorials preferred to the Animal Humane Society.
Gratitude and thanks to all of his health care givers, especially those at Regions Heart Center in Saint Paul, MN.
