Mary Theresa Dubay

Mary died peacefully on February 9th. She was born to Irish immigrants, James Mulvey and Catherine Condon, on October 24, 1925 in New Haven , Connecticut. She grew up in a devout Catholic home with her sisters, Margaret and Kathleen,  and brothers,  James, John and Charles. They lived on Willis Street in a neighborhood that was as ethnically diverse as it was close-knit. It was a wonderful place for Mary to grow up with her siblings and neighbor friends. After graduating from high school and working for the Knights of Columbus, Mary joined the Navy and served our country as a Wave. She met her husband, Elie Dubay,  at the naval base in Norfolk, Virginia;  and on February 5, 1955 they were married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Haven. Elie brought his bride back with him to Minneapolis and within a year’s time they moved into the house they had built in St. Anthony Village. There they raised their five sons and one daughter.  

Mary lived a life of deep faith with refreshing simplicity. She kept her eyes fixed on Christ and she loved Him and His Church to the end. The greatest gift Mary and Elie would give their children and their spouses –James (Karen), Peter (Renee), John (Brenda), Marie Uppgaard (David), Elie (Becky) and Edward (Rose), grandchildren and great grandchildren was the faith they themselves had received from their own parents. They took great pride and joy in each and every one of their grandchildren: Carolynn, Janell, Monica, Angela, Luke, Jacob, Matthew, Timothy, Brigitte, Kevin, Patrick , William, Rosemary, Elizabeth, Amy, Margaret, David, Theresa, Joshua, Rachel, Amelia, Laura, Pieter, Anders, Lucia, Ingrid, Mathias, Zachary, Xavier, Elesha, Nicole, Michael,  Ashlee, Jessica, Edward and Bradley. And they rejoiced in their great grandchildren: Alexandra, Sarina, Skylar, Elijah, Blake, Ben, Bentley, Leksi, Lucia, Brycen, Andrew, Benjamin, Owen, Avery, Alice, Eleanor, Benjamin, Anthony and Conner. Their marriage was truly fruitful.

After her husband retired from Northern States Power, Elie and Mary went to work for St. Charles Borromeo Church. Mary worked as the laundress  at the rectory while Elie helped with parish projects and programs.  They were both so happy to  be near our Lord, praying and  and working in His vineyard, quietly  building up His  Church and imparting the faith to the next generation of believers. Mary and Elie also loved to travel and to spend time at their cabin in the woods north of Mora. The beauty of creation spoke deeply to each of them and they never tired of marveling at God’s handiwork.

Mary will be remembered for her stories—the stories she told and the ones she always had time to listen to. Whether they were the stories of loved ones or of perfect strangers, Mary always entrusted them to Jesus and Mary. She understood that every story was told within the greater Story of God’s Love and that His final Word would be merciful.

From her childhood Mary was a devoted daughter of our Blessed Mother. She would run to her with her troubles and sought to imitate her  selfless love of God and neighbor.  Mary will spend her eternity doing what she does best: returning love for Love. Her mission will remain unchanged; she will simply continue to delight God and all His  angels and saints with her signature Irish jig and be ever ready to put in a good word  for her loved ones.
