Victoria Rose "Vicki" Matthes, age 85, of N.E. Minneapolis, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 27, 2017  at Catholic Eldercare Transitional Care Center in Minneapolis. Vicki was born in Minneapolis on November 26, 1931 and graduated from Edison High School in 1949. Her journey as wife and mother began in 1955 when she married  Edwin August Matthes Jr., a career marine. While the eldest and youngest of their 7 children were born in Minneapolis, the middle five were sprinkled on military bases from coast to coast.

In 1971, they returned home to Minnesota and purchased Marino’s Restaurant, where Vicki was the lifeblood of the business. Marino’s was a fixture in Northeast and Vicki was the Queen behind the cashier/hostess stand, as she was affectionately referred to by her husband and children. She lived a wonderful life and was blessed with six sons and one daughter. Eventually, Queen Victoria became Grandma Vicki, doting on her 19 grandkids, 6 great grandkids with 3 more on the way.

She was always at her best when taking care of people, whether at the restaurant, at home with all the neighborhood kids and neighbors, or at the resort we stayed every summer. Food, fishing and family. She will live on because LOVE LIVES ON, and the love she brought was enough for an eternity.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Matthes; her parents Ralph and Mary Marino, and her sister, Sr. Laura F.S.P.A.

She is survived by sons, Ed (Cheryl), Ralph (Karen), Larry (Ann), Danny (Shelley), Tony (Laurie), Randy (Marissa), daughter Michelle Matthes Swanson (Todd); 19 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren with 3 more on the way; siblings, Louis (Marie) Marino, James (Roberta) Marino and Jane (Bud) Kibler; and beloved nieces and nephews.

The Matthes family and all of NE Minneapolis have lost a treasure and she will be greatly missed. The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the staff at Main Street Lodge, Catholic Eldercare and Ecumen Hospice for their loving care for our mother.
